About

Tahoe Mountain Weather specializes in forecasting Tahoe-specific backcountry weather and snow conditions for areas outside resort boundaries and far above town.

Originally started in 2023 as a personal challenge to record and forecast an entire season of backcountry snow, the site has grown to include forecasts of backcountry trail and weather conditions in all seasons.

Whether you’re interested in learning about the how and why of Tahoe weather or just looking to grab a more in depth forecast than what an app can provide for your next adventure, you’ve come to the right place.

And if you appreciate a local, human-made forecast for the mountains, subscribe and consider supporting the site.

About the Forecaster

Steve Byrne has been skiing, climbing, and running through the Sierra–and marveling over the weather–since his first visit in 1997. Originally trained in the humanities, he recently returned to college to obtain a weather forecasting certificate from Penn State University to complement and formalize his life-long study of Sierra mountain weather. Steve resides in North Lake Tahoe with his wife and two boys.
